Ladybower Fisheries

Ladybower Reservoir in Derbyshire is famous across the country for  huge Rainbow Trout that regularly weigh in beyond the ten pound mark. The Ladybower fisheries cover water over 500 acres in size, making it the ideal still water for the native Brown Trout to also flourish.

Fly fishing in Derbyshire at Ladybower Reservoir is a pleasure due to the scenery of the Peak District alone. As with any big fishery, just about any pattern or tactic can yield results at different times. Some fishing fly patterns regularly favoured by local anglers include the Whisky Fly, Black Gnat and Mayfly.

Facilities at Ladybower Reservoir

The venue is run by a friendly, helpful team of guides, instructors and enthusiasts. There is a well-stocked tackle shop where you can buy just about anything you’ll need for a day fly fishing. There are excellent facilities for anglers and a private car park which means you won’t have to worry about the notorious parking wardens that patrol the Peak District National Park.

Fishing is from both the bank and the water. With a perimeter of 13 miles or so there is too much water for a bank angler to cover. As a result there are both boats and float tubes to hire. Both a re competitively priced and full instruction is given. Life vests are supplied and mandatory.

The venue is ideal for beginners. There is ample tuition available on-site at a reasonable cost. There is a large pontoon from which beginners can cast a line easily.

Fishing at Ladybower Fisheries

At with any huge fly fishery the biggest issue is finding the fish. This is very dependant upon the weather as the star-shaped venue is influenced by the prevailing wind. The dam wall is always a popular hot spot as is the shore line either side of the boat jetties and casting pontoons.

There are a number of places where fresh water runs in to the reservoir. These are likely to introduce food and are well worth a cast.

Ladybower Fisheries Fishing Reports

11/12/2020: Great casting practice for a nine year old. And a blank.

Fishing at Ladybower FisheriesThe weather was changeable all day, from intense sunshine to freezing cold conditions. We saw no fish all day, despite moving right across the 500 acres of water. No fly life to be seen. As we hired a boat the day was still enjoyable. I’ve now got a 9 year old who can pilot a boat with a petrol engine.

  1. As far as I’m concerned Ladybower is becoming an absolute gem for fly fishing! I remember when I fished it for the 1st time! Many tactics employed on all large waters will culminate a bag of Hard fighters!
I’m not going to go into details about tips or tricks because you can catch Trout just about anywhere in the Reservoir? You only need to find their depth! The wardens are very well informed and will advise you!
I drive for almost 2 hours to fish Ladybower and I have to say it is worth it!
The tackle shop has anything you may be short of? The staff are always friendly, helpful and polite!
I would recommend a day out on the boat if you want to go exploring? The banks are very steep so casting towards them will put you into deep water pretty quickly!
I’m absolutely convinced that if you take yourself out there? You will never be disappointed! The countryside and wildlife is also a pleasure to behold!
    Good luck & be safe!
